Permanent Supportive Housing Works
A New Place to Call Home
Kevin was born and raised in North Minneapolis before he went on to serve in the U.S. Army as a paratrooper. Kevin joined because he wanted to protect his family. But, when he returned home, he faced PTSD and mental health challenges. Unfortunately, Kevin lost the apartment he was living in. He began experiencing homelessness.
Through a housing assistance program for veterans, Kevin found a place to call home at Catholic Charities Endeavors Residence.
Permanent Supportive Housing at Endeavors
Endeavors provides homes for 173 people in Minneapolis. Many people who live at Endeavors are veterans and people with complex medical conditions.
There are on-site case management services and resources for people exiting difficult situations. Staff welcomed Kevin with a basket of essential cleaning supplies. They also invited him to newcomer group meetings to help him understand his new community.
Kevin described his arrival as a “godsend.” At Endeavors, Kevin said he found what he had been missing for years: safety, structure, and consistent care. Kevin now has secure housing and access to resources to help him rebuild his life with dignity.
“I feel comfortable enough to talk to any staff member about anything I need. I see a genuine care and concern from the staff.”
A Truly Supportive Environment
Kevin said that Endeavors provides more than just a roof over his head. “I feel comfortable enough to talk to any staff member about anything I need,” he emphasized. “I see a genuine care and concern from the staff.”
Kevin also works with on-site support staff at Endeavors who help him set goals, plan next steps, and stay accountable in his mental-health work.
“My social worker is so helpful at giving me guidance,” he said. “Just having her in my corner is a blessing; I wouldn’t have a fraction of the opportunities I have if it wasn’t for her.”
Endeavors staff also coordinate resources with the VA so Kevin can continue receiving specialized PTSD care for veterans. The structure and daily presence of staff give Kevin consistency. Something he lacked while experiencing homelessness.
“This place is a godsend and totally helpful compared to living in [a traditional] apartment,” he said. “Endeavors gave me the tools . . . to get me back on the right path.”
Looking to the future with gratitude
Kevin looks ahead with determination. While he finds living downtown convenient and close to everything, he hopes to someday live in a place with a balcony and closer access to nature. But for now, Kevin continues to raise his right hand in gratitude.
“I just say, ‘Thank you, Jesus’ that places like Catholic Charities Endeavors exist to help rebuild. That’s priceless.”
