Catholic Charities’ Dick Johnson Named CFO of the Year

Minneapolis-St. Paul Business Journal Recognizes Catholic Charities Chief Financial Officer for Leadership in the Field

Congratulations to Catholic Charities’ Chief Financial Officer, Dick Johnson, who will be honored at the Minneapolis-St. Paul Business Journal’s CFO of the Year Awards event today. Dick was nominated for the award by Jeff Huggett, a Partner at Dominium who has worked extensively with Dick on our Dorothy Day Place campus development. Below are some excerpts from Jeff’s nomination. They reflect the talent and leadership Dick brings not only to Catholic Charities, but also to our entire community:

  • “Though I’m nominating Dick Johnson from Catholic Charities for the ‘nonprofit CFO’ category, I would just as proudly nominate him for CFO of the Year – period. His technical knowledge, leadership, ability to navigate legal complexity, build authentic and trusting relationships, oversee diverse operations, connect to Catholic Charities’ mission, and earn the respect of his team AND the best financial/executive leaders in this community make him worthy of this honor.”
  • “Dick is a stellar financial and organizational leader whose work is advancing the entire nonprofit field. … I’ve come to trust [his] judgment, ….he is always thinking about how Catholic Charities can make smart business decisions to advance the agency’s financial health and mission impact – now and in the future. Dick fosters collective accountability, building a uniform understanding of finances and encouraging staff to be active participants in stewarding them. A true mentor, Dick has deepened financial acumen throughout the organization… training and empowering program leaders to manage the financial complexities of 36 different programs with greater sophistication. This directly correlates to Catholic Charities’ financial growth and strength, enabling it to proactively make decisions to improve program quality, impact, and stability.”
  • “Colleagues describe Dick as the consummate teacher and coach, calm, kind, fair, approachable, professional, genuine, trusting, wise, thoughtful, collaborative, ‘a listener who invites inquiry,’ …someone who ‘makes everyone – including clients – feel valued.’ One colleague said, ‘He connects to us as people, knowing we bring our whole selves with us to work – that’s why he inspires AND fosters loyalty.'”
  • “Dick also regularly volunteers with Catholic Charities by helping sort donated items and serving meals. A colleague says: ‘Dick truly has a good heart. He’s always asking if he can help…he’ll change into jeans and help right away. We had last-minute painting needs at the warehouse, so he went there to paint with his sons and the Boy Scout troop he leads. He always wants to do the right thing – and doesn’t do it for the recognition…he just does it because that’s who he is.'”

Congratulations, Dick—we admire your leadership, and we are honored you are part of our team! !  Read more in this Minneapolis-St. Paul Business Journal profile of Dick:  https://www.bizjournals.com/twincities/news/2019/11/05/2019-cfo-of-the-year-richard-johnson-catholic.html
